Ample fields as a basis for possibilistic processes

Ample fields play an important role in possibility theory. These fields of subsets of a universe, which are additionally closed under arbitrary unions, act as the natural domains for possibility measures. A set provided with an ample field is then called an ample space. In this paper we generalise Wang's notions of product ample field and product ample space. We make a topological study of ample spaces and their products, and introduce ample subspaces, extensions and one-point extensions of ample spaces. In this way, a first step towards a mathematical theory of possibilistic processes is made.     

On the Analysis of the Virtual Waiting Time in Open Queueing Networks

The model of an open queueing network in heavy traffic has been developed. These models are mathematical models of computer networks in heavy traffic. A limit theorem has been presented for the virtual waiting time of a customer in heavy traffic in open queueing networks. Finally, we present an application of the theorem—a reliability model from computer network practice.     

On existence and local attractivity of solutions of a quadratic Volterra integral equation of fractional order

In the paper we study the existence of solutions of a nonlinear quadratic Volterra integral equation of fractional order. This equation is considered in the Banach space of real functions defined, continuous and bounded on an unbounded interval. Moreover, we show that solutions of this integral equation are locally attractive.     

Contractive projections on Banach algebras

In this paper, we explore the properties of projections of norm one on general Banach algebras, in particular the relation with conditional expectations for algebras which arise in harmonic analysis.     

Measures on double or resonant eigenvalues for linear Schrödinger operator

In this paper we consider linear Schrödinger operator with double or resonant eigenvalues. The main result is the bound of the measure (in a suitable space of functions) of the potentials leading to such double or resonant eigenvalues. Namely we present measure type estimates evaluating neighborhoods of the so-called double or resonant set.

An efficient algorithm for solving the incompressible fluid flow equations

The present paper reports on a modified pressure implicit predictor corrector type scheme for solving the flow governing equations, in which a consistent formulation is combined with a multi-grid solver for the pressure correction. In addition a parabolic sublayer (PSL) approach for the treatment of the flow in the vicinity of solid walls is critically evaluated in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. The lid-driven cavity flow is chosen as the test case and results are presented for Reynolds numbers ranging from 100 to 1000. Predictions with the proposed scheme indicate substantial computational savings and fairly good agreement when compared with previous work. The PSL approach reduces the computing time, but with increasing Reynolds numbers the accuracy of the solutions tends to deteriorate.     

On a nonlocal problem for semilinear differential equations with upper semicontinuous nonlinearities in general Banach spaces

Sufficient conditions on the existence of mild solutions for the following semilinear nonlocal evolution inclusion with upper semicontinuous nonlinearity: u^′(t)∈A(t)u(t)+F(t,u(t)), 0<t?d, u(0)=g(u), are given when g is completely continuous and Lipschitz continuous in general Banach spaces, respectively. An example concerning the partial differential equation is also presented.     

Evaluating the performance of Swedish savings banks according to service efficiency

This article develops principles for an evaluation of the efficiency of a savings bank. It starts out from the observation that such a bank is less profit oriented than a commercial bank. The customer is a vital stakeholder to the savings bank implying a greater emphasis on customer service provision. We are using data envelopment analysis (DEA) as a method to consider the service orientation of savings banks. We thereby demonstrate how an evaluation of the performance of savings banks according to “service efficiency” differs from an evaluation based on the traditional “profit” or shareholder concept. We determine the number of Swedish savings banks being “service efficient” as well as the average degree of service efficiency in this industry.     

Global asymptotic stability of solutions of a functional integral equation

Using the technique of measures of noncompactness we prove a theorem on the existence and global asymptotic stability of solutions of a functional integral equation. The investigations are placed in the Banach space of real functions defined, continuous and bounded on an unbounded interval. A few realizations of the result obtained are indicated.
